Junghun Cho, PhD, is currently an Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering at George Washington University. He received a B.S. in Physics from the University of Michigan Ann Arbor, and an M.S. in Physics from the University of Wisconsin Madison. He earned his PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Cornell University in 2019. Following his doctoral studies, he completed postdoctoral training at MRI Research Institute in Weill Cornell Medicine, where he received the NIH K99/R00 Career Development Award in 2021.

His research has focused on (1) creating quantitative maps of critical tissue properties, such as cerebral oxygen extraction fraction (OEF) – the percentage of oxygen that tissue extracts from the blood – by developing biophysics models and data processing techniques in biomedical imaging, particularly in MRI, and (2) using these quantitative maps to advance our understanding of brain functions and to investigate the cause and treatment of neurologic disorders. His studies on OEF have been recognized with multiple awards, including the Young Innovator Award from the Korean-American Biomedical Engineering Society in 2025 and the “Rookie of the Year” BME Faculty Award in 2024. In this seminar, he will discuss biophysics modeling, data processing, validation, and clinical application of OEF mapping.
